Week Nine: Shedding, Breakage & Length Retention

Hey Natural Beauties,

We would be fooling ourselves if we didn't admit that length retention and growth was not an integral part of our journey. We all want healthy hair and with healthy hair, comes growth. For inspiration, we have included a video of Kimmaytube's growth over her natural hair journey. She is truly a testament that afro-textured hair can grow long and beautiful.

It is evident that hair DOES grow, but some of us may get in the mindset that our hair is not growing. However, you should be happy to know that on average, our hair grows 1/4-1/2 inch every single month. What prevents us from seeing our growth is breakage. It is important to understand the difference between shedding and breakage because many people tend to confuse the two. On average, we can shed anywhere between 50-100 hairs a day. We should be concerned with breakage which usually takes the form of short hair strands without the white bulb on the end (this means it did not shed from the scalp)

You can find more information on shedding and breakage HERE and HERE!

You may want to check out this video as well!

Are any of you suffering from breakage? What are you doing to curb/stop it?

Also, we have chosen a winner for the Week 8 Giveaway.....The winner is G!! Congrats!!! Please email your mailing address to marketing@curlsofjoy.com. You have 72 hours to claim your prize.o

  1. THESE VIDS WERE OK ALTHOUGH THEY WERE DONE BY TWO OF MY LEAST FAV NATURALS. I'M NOT INTO LENGTH AS MUCH AS I AM INTO HEALTHY HAIR. IT SEEMS TO ME AS SOON AS SOME NATURALS GET THE LENGTH THEY FLAT IRON TO SHOW IT OFF. J JUST WANT HEALTHY HAIR AND REAL CHICKS WHO FEEL THE SAME WAY.

  2. I thank you all for posting this yesterday, this was indeed one of my concerns. I know shedding happens, but I wasn't sure if the amount of shedding was an issue or not. After reading this, I know my hair isn't breaking, I am shedding the expected amount of hair, and my hair continues to grow...probably 1/2 inch one month, 1/4 of an inch another month. I do believe that what you put into your body has a lot to do with your hair growth and length retention. Thanks again Curls of Joy for this post! Happy Growing Ladies!

  3. Kimmy's hair grew so fast! Definately above the average growth but she is very disciplined in not only her hair journey but her health overall and it shows! She is of encouragement to me tho and the reason why I know so much about my hair already. Thanks for the vids for this week! :)

  4. the thing about this is i mainly finger comb my hair and lately i have been wearing my hair in either a sew-in or a 3 pc wig so my hair goes at least a week to a week and a half with no manipulation, so i be confused as to if the hairs in and around my sink falling from my head is the necessary shedding that comes from my hair being up or actually breakage from maybe being up too long or so.

  5. Hello Beauties! First, let me say,CONGRATS TO G!!!!!:-) Second,I want to thank you,CURLS OF JOY LADIES! Its a blessing to see us naturals are not alone on our journeys!:-) I have tried to manage my breakage by not wearing certain types of material on my neck and hair. I have changed my styling tools, moisturize more, and I believe doing the CG method has helped my hair flourish!!! I always been big on the moisture of my hair also softness! Length wasnt a big big deal for me but it is very nice to see the growth in mine and my daughters' hair:-) I adore Kimmaytube and Alicia James so it was really nice to see a video from them both:-) I definitely appreciate knowing the difference between breakage and shedding! Thank you again!!!:-)

  6. I have been suffering but it isn't as much as I have been .

I do still use combs and comb-brushes only some times do I use my fingers . I am however trying to use more finger combing and only use my combs when I want straight parts . I have noticed also its only because my hair is dry that little pieces end up in my hand. I do have more shedding than breakage so of course I am happy about that !

But yes,I try to add moisture so when I do touch my hair only shedding hair falls.
