Week One: "Know YOUR Hair, Love YOUR Hair" Kickoff

Hey Natural Beauties!

Today kicks off the beginning of the “Know Your Hair, Love Your Hair” challenge. Welcome everyone and thank you for joining! To begin, we encourage you to create a goal that you would like to meet. This goal can be anything - growth retention, combating dryness, using better products/revisiting old products, to lessening heat usage.

This challenge will take place over the course of 12 weeks and at the end, we hope that you would have accomplished your goals or learned something new about yourself and YOUR hair!

If you decide to continue participating we ask that you keep track of your experience through diary entries, pictures, blogging, or vlogging. Remember, we will have group check-ins at the end of weeks 4,8, and 12!

This challenge is meant to be fun, stress-fee, and easy going. With that said, here are the ground rules :)
  • Respect that everyone has different thoughts and ideas.
  • Profanity and inappropriate comments will be deleted.
  • The way you treat your hair isn't the same way someone else does.
  • Remember that we are here to achieve a goal.
  • All goals are different, but this challenge will be used to bring them together.
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN

We ask that you complete the following:
1. List your name.
2. Where are your from?
2. Why did you decide to participate in this challenge?
3. What are you hoping to achieve through this challenge/what are your natural hair goals?
4. What does "natural" mean to you?
5. How will you be tracking your progress (leave links to blogs, vlogs, and/or pages if applicable)?

  1. Hi Im Courtney! I am originally from Memphis, TN however I live in Santa Rita, Guam with my husband on the naval base. I decided to participate in this challenge because I am so excited and ready to watch my natural hair do it's thing. I want to take the best care I can of it so that it may reach its full potential. I am positive that this challenge will teach me so much about my hair. I aspire to grow long, luxurious, and healthy hair. Being natural means being in your natural state, the way God intended one to be. Being natural helps us learn to accept ourselves as we are and I love it.

    3. Thanks! Before I went natural I never noticed but there is a good amount of women with natural hair here. My products are limited but I have been working with it. Having natural hair here in Guam is the best thing because of the tropical climate. I dont have to worry about sweating my hair out.

  2. My name is Shemeeka. I am from Detroit, MI but currently live in Long Island, NY. I have been natural on and off for several years; but always managed to go back to getting a relaxer when I wanted to wear my hair longer. This time; I am attempting to grow my hair out natural so; it has been 13 months since my last relaxer and I would say I've been 100% natural since August 2011. I joined this challenge because I would like to learn more about my hair now that it's past the TWA phase. Natural for me is embracing my true self.

Some of my natural hair goals include growth and moisture retention, and to reach my goal of a high puff within the next year. I already have a hair journal but I wanna start a blog just for me and other naturals also. Do you have any tips on how to get started??

  8. Hi (: My name is nakayla. Im from Atlanta. I decided to participate in this challenge because i find it very difficult to find a regimen and i think its partly because i dont know much about my hair. I figured this challenge could help me a lot. My goals for this challenge are growth retention and establishing a good regimen so that i can commit to being natural. In the months that i have been completly natural i've been back and fourth with straightening my hair ...which has created a little heat damage :(
Natural , to me, means freedom to be yourself. It means accepting yourself although the better half of society may not . I will be tracking my hair progress via blog. http://curlyhairedme.blogspot.com/ . I also have created an online diary so i may share pages of that as well.

  10. Hello...I'm Zetra. I'm from NY but currently living in Stuttgart Germany. I believe by participating in this challenge, I will learn how to care for, style, and most of all love my hair. My biggest discouragement at this point in my journey is not having realistic goals or being able to identify with someone who has the same texture as I do. I'm hoping to achieve knowledge that will help me to embrace and love how God designed me---then share that love with others; that is what natural means to me! I haven't decided for sure how I will track my progress but I am leaning toward my website that is under construction. Until it's up maybe I'll be bold enough to vlog on YouTube?

    3. I am hoping to achieve, hair retention, grow my hair out 5 more inches, gain the knowledge to protect and learn more about my hair.
    4. Being natural to me, means embracing my not only my hair, but being true myself. I feel by doing this, I will not only learn that, but maybe be able to show my personal feelings more.
    5. I will keep a written diary and I will vlog. My good friend Alexis will help me film it. =]

  13. My name is Shai and I'm from New Jersey. This is the first challenge I've ever participated in so I figured that since we are moving into the warm weather months here on the East Coast and I'm moving out of winter braidout mode and into summer wash-n-go mode, I figured the timing is perfect. I am hoping to learn more about the CG method in particular as while I've never declared myself as officially CG, I've noticed over the past months that a lot of the hair care and styling techniques and products that I use are consistent with the CG method. As I sit here typing with a fresh conditioner-only styled wash-n-go. Who knew! Being nature to me means being "ME" and not trying to fit into anyone else's mold or perception of beauty. Its being fearless and spontaneous and letting the beauty that I was born with shine in every way possible.

I'm not quite sure how I'm going to track/document my progress. I will definitely be checking in and participating on his blog on a regular basis at the very least.

  14. Hello all! My name is Dominique. I am from Memphis, TN. I decided to become natural because my hair would never retain length probably do to sew ins and relaxers. I hope to develop a hair care regimen that best suits my very dry, very thick hair. Being natural means breaking free from the commercialized thought of what beauty is. I have been transitioning for 9 months. I am almost free! I will be tracking my progress on my blog at http://www.blogger.com/profile/18193864918619408829

    3. I hope at the end of the challenge to know my hair better and to figure out a regime/regimes that work well for my hair especially when it comes to detangling and moisture.

  17. Hello everyone! My name is Zuli and I currently reside in Charlotte, NC with my husband and son. I recently did the BC (3/12/12), and I decided to join the challenge so I could keep track of my hair progress over the next three months, and learn from other experienced naturals. My goal is to fight dryness!! So I will be trying the Curly Girl Method for the next twelve weeks. I’m pretty sure moist hair equals healthy hair which leads to length retention, my other goal. I believe being natural means being you and loving it! I’m learning to be proud of myself just the way I am. I plan to keep and upload pictures and thinking about starting a blog

  18. Hello! My name is Tiffany and I am originally from New Jersey, but now live in Georgia. I decided to participate in this challenge because I am currently transitioning to natural hair (last relaxer was November 2011) and I am just excited about learning about my hair! What I hope to achieve from this challenge is knowledge about what my hair likes, dislikes, etc. and how to take better care of it. My hair goals are to not give up and big chop sooner than I am ready to, to have growth retention, and combat dryness and breakage. What “natural” means to me is not having or making any chemical alterations done to your hair. I will be tracking my progress via vlogging on YouTube. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/tifferbee91?feature=mhee . Happy healthy hair journey everyone! We can do it! :)

  20. Im Ms. Lici *waves*
I am from Philly, but currently reside in New England in a small town in CT. I am participating in this challenge because I can use all the challenges I can to get my hair (also known as Bella) to a full, healthy state. Tracking what I am doing for her has been a goal since I went natural, but I haven't been doing GREAT at it. Now I am revisiting the spreadsheet phase :)
I am hoping to continue to retain length for Bella (and my DD's wonderful head of hair as well). I am also hoping to get a better understanding if which products work for us. I am getting better, but I do not have it completely down.
'Natural' to me, in regards to hair, is relaxer free. I don't care if you straighten it or weave weaves or even dye. If it's relaxer free, I consider it natural.
I will attempt to regularly blog about my progress. My last semester of college has been taking up most of my time, but I will try to squeeze in regular updates from Bella and I :)

  30. Hey yall My name is Lena and am so excited to be a part of this challenge. First time so please excuse the enthusiasm. I am originally from Boston ma and there area lot of naturals around. I decided to participate in this challenge mainly because i'm have been natural all my life and as crazy as it seems i dont know a thing about retaining length on my curl type. I swear ive done it all especially with copying a naturals exact regimen then only to have my hair fall out. I want to learn about how to nurture my hair. In doing that i know my eating habits will have to ultimately change too. My ultimate hair goals are to gain knowledge on what my hair needs to thrive. Lessen my single knot strands. Learn patience with my hair even when im in a hurry. i want to ultimately achieve bras strap length in curls. Being natural i feel is being free. I love that my HAIR IS CRAZY. Doesnt matter what style my hair is in, its still different. I like that no one head of curl is alike. Shows our uniqueness. I will be tracking my progess through video blogging on my youtube page LenaVeritas. Cant wait to chat and share what i know with all you natural beauties. Goodluck curlmates!!!!!!!!

  31. My name is Erika “Naturalnista76” and I was born, raised, and currently reside in the “Lou” St. Louis, Missouri.
I made the decision to participate in the Know Your Hair, Love Your Hair challenge because I have been relaxer-free for close to six years and honestly I most recently gained a desire to become acquainted with my natural hair.
I am a You Tube viewer and I get quite overwhelmed viewing the various channels dedicated to natural hair. I attempt to follow the hair regimens of these beautiful naturalnistas that KNOW their hair some attempts are successful and others are more than an EPIC fail! I love their tips but sometimes I find that techniques or products that work for their hair unfortunately don’t work for mine. So I made a decision to stop being a spectator and get in the game to become fully acquainted with my tresses or as I call them “Tracks by God”.
I am hoping to achieve a variety of things from this challenge. I would like to learn how to grow natural healthy hair, to establish MY OWN hair regimen, and to gain more information on styling my hair.
To me “Natural” means embracing my God given tresses avoiding any harsh chemicals designed to alter my original curl pattern. Simply put Embracing the Divine Design.
I am new to both blogging and vlogging and I plan to do both.

  37. Hey there everyone, I'm Undine. I'm from Maryland. This is also my first challenge, this is my second attempt @ going natural. I wanted to learn more ways to take care of my natural curls. I'm loving my journey more & more each day! My initial goal is to grow out my hair, it's been nine months. I was a little frustrated, but I'm happy now! For me, natural means no chemicals whatsoever in my hair, loving the natural curls that are on my head. When I first went natural, I use to put texturizers in my hair. But I thought to myself, that really isn't natural. Well, I started a blog last year, I'm still new to blogging, so it's a learning process for me, but this is how I plan to track my progress along w/ pictures.

My name is Marv from the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. I decided to participate because this challenge addresses subject matters that I am intrigued by. I am hoping to experience healthy flourishing hair and growth retention. My natural hair goals are acceptance and peace with the nature of my hair. I interpret natural hair as hair that is not altered by chemicals and substances which change the anatomic and or physical structure of hair shaft, cuticle or medulla. I will track my progress with photo journaling.

  39. Well the for the first day of the challenge, I've again attempted to do a wash and go. However, the 2nd day leaves my hair severely dry. This is probably because I didn't put any products in during teh night, because I didn't want to 'ruffle' any curls that may have formed. I'm using Mahogany curls method to do a wash and go and maybe it's because my hair texture is really tight curls. What is the night time regimen for a wash and go.. help as my hair is also coloured and needs a re-do, bought henna but too scared to apply...

In the morning I lightly pull at the curls with my fingers and go. I usually can maintain my W&G for almost a week. Good luck!

My main goals for this challenge are moisture retention and hair growth. For me, Natural means embracing not only the NEW me, but the REAL me! I looking forward to the next 12 weeks!!!! 46. Hey everybody!! My name is Crystal and I am from Chicago, but reside in Champaign, Illinois. I transitioned last year in January with braids and did the big chop a year later.I decided to go natural cause I was tired of spending all that money on perms, color, and sew-ins. I am 47 years old and have a thyroid condition which makes my hair thin and dry. My goals is to re-educate myself on how to care for my "real hair" and to accept my hair and to learn how to have the most healthiest hair I can have. Natural to me means FREE!!!!!!

  47. Hello everyone! My name is Nicky, and I'm in Columbus, Georgia. I wanted to participate in the challenge because I did the BC in February, and my hair has developed it's curl pattern and has grown much quicker than I thought it would. So, I'm extremely interested in seeing how it will grow and to what length. I want to be able to use this as a means to make that possible. Natural is being your true self without being in a box. It's a state of mind and a symbol of confidence - because everyone can't be natural. ;-) I will be tracking my progress through pictures, and hopefully through my youtube account - but for sure through pics and a journal. I am SO excited about this!

  52. My name is Jodi-Ann but everyone just calls me Jodi.

    I'm from NYC

I decided to join this challenge because I think that it would be a postive space to indulge in my hair obsession. I have pretty healthy hair habits now but I'd like to continue that and also learn new things about my hair that were previously unknown to me.

My goal throughout this challenge is to retain length and work on finding the best way to combat dryness which has been my main issue since the BC. I would also love to come away with more styling skills because I'm pretty lame when it comes to styling currently....lol.

Being "natural" to me means being relaxer free. Anything after that is all gravy. Whether you want to color it, straighten it, weave it up, it's all good to me.

I will be tracking my progress through pictures and hopefully video via my YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/LADYTAMJ and

    Soooo Excited!!!

  53. Hi everyone, My name is Samantha Denson and I am from Dublin,GA but I currently live in San Diego,Ca. I love to follow Mahogany Curls on Youtube, and today I saw that there was a Curls of Joy challenge. I hope it is not too late to join. Since I am new to the world of curls I decided this challenge would be good for me to do. Through this challenge, I hope I can set goals for my hair, determine what is better for my hair, and receive advice from others who have been curly way longer than I have.I'm also hoping to get to know my hair better and to be comfortable and patient with my TWA. Natural to me means being FREE;Natural means no longer fearing water or humidity. Natural means being released from the harsh and vicious cycle of relaxers, touch ups,and other chemicals. Natural means my hair is free to do what it wants, to be who it truly is. And that is to be CURLY. Natural means no longer damaging the aspect that makes me...me, and that's my hair.I'm thinking about using youtube or creating a blog to track my progress.

  54. Hello again, my name is Diamonn Newton. I am from Orange County, California but I currently live in Nashville, Tennessee. I decided to participate in this challenge because it not only would be my first challenge online but my first time actually putting the time into my hair. I have not accomplished much in being a year natural. I hope to achieve length, health, and a concrete regimen to follow. My natural hair goals are to reduce an itchy, dry scalp and hair and for my hair to be healthy and thrive. I am hoping to achieve tips and guidance to meet my hair goals and learn about different products to use for my hair type because I do not know what my hair likes, only what it does not like.
Natural means to me being the finer "YOU!" We go out in the world usually for what the media portrays or for what people what to see, but being natural (ourselves)brings out the best in you. Natural has SOOO many meanings but that is what it means to me. I am thinking about emailing myself to keep progress. I am in college so it is kind of hard to do vlogs consistently. I am excited about this challenge, and once again I wish everyone well and great hair!!

I decided to participate in this challenge because I wanted to educate myself more about my hair and learn from people's experiences, tips, & styles. I also want to be able to help other natural girls with their hair. My natural hair goals are hair growth, establishing a firm hair regimen, and eating better and healthier. Natural to me means being in your own skin, being raw and true to who you are. When it comes to hair natural also means not allowing harsh chemicals or anything that can damage your hair. I decided to participate in this challenge to learn more about my hair and truly become more acquainted with it, learning what the best methods and products are for it. My goal is to achieve growth/length retention and overall healthy hair. I also want to go back to enjoying my natural hair journey. Being natural, to me, means not chemically altering the texture of the hair. While I will definitely be tracking my progress through pictures, I haven't yet decided if I'm going to include it in my existing blog or not, but here's the link, just in case (http://naturallyyo.blogspot.com). 60. -List your name: Ciara.
-Where are your from: New York. Rockland County Area.
-Why did you decide to participate in this challenge? I’ve always wanted to be apart of a hair challenge, to see if I can began and accomplish it. As well as the list of things spoken about learning more about my hair. Helping me establish and master her. Taking her to extraordinary measures that I haven’t even witnessed. To attain more knowledge not only for me, but to be able to share with the women around me.
-What are you hoping to achieve through this challenge/what are your natural hair goals? I want healthier hair for real. I would like to master retaining length. I feel like those are two things I have failed at since I begin to care for my hair. I would like to know what to do with what I have and with what I am going to get. As well as know what not to do. And to know what’s a basic foundation of what to give my hair. Not only for my head but as I said before to share the knowledge with people around me. I am also trying to stay strictly natural with products. I will completely refrain from using heat and styling tools on my actual hair throughout this challenge.
My ultimate hair goal is to grow thick, healthy, hip length natural hair.
Right now at the end of this challenge it is to have ALL around collar bone length hair .
-What does “natural” mean to you?
For my personal paradigm, natural is being how God intended me to be before disobedience(sin) happen. Right now I am focusing mainly on my hair cause that’s what we are speaking about. Having my hair as is without chemicals. Using products that do not give short term, or long term harm.
-How will you be tracking your progress?
    I made an account with Tumblr :) www.takinginfinitybeyond.tumblr.com .

    1. List your name. Dana
    2. Where are your from? Houston, TX
    2. Why did you decide to participate in this challenge? I saw this on one of the YouTube channels I follow and thought it would be encouraging as we all know this natural journey can be a difficult one at times..especially when you do not have anyone to discuss the ups and downs with personally.
    3. What are you hoping to achieve through this challenge/what are your natural hair goals? I would like to understand my hair better, I feel like I'm searching and searching constantly, via the blog sites, YouTube channels, etc...but my hair isn't your hair, or her hair, etc. I want to fully understand my hair, what it needs to continue to grow, stay healthy, and look beautiful.
    4. What does "natural" mean to you? Natural to me is a lifestyle, not just a term for woman wearing their hair in it's natural state. Being natural is, as Ciara said in her comments, being who God made you. And this doesn't mean just by your hairstyle, but your health, your lifestyle, and spiritually.
    5. How will you be tracking your progress (leave links to blogs, vlogs, and/or pages if applicable)? I will track my progress on my blog, www.melloyella.blogspot.com with pictures, videos and posts.

  63. My name is Thea and I am from Brooklyn, NY. I decided to participate in this challenge because I just became natural and would like to get as much from this experience as I can. I want to know what to expect, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I do a lot of research and will continue to do so so that I can be as knowledgeable of my hair as possible. I want to learn about hair types, curl patterns, and different hair care products to try on my hair to see what works and what doesn't. I'm hoping to learn about my hair and others who have gone through or is going through similar experiences as me so I won't feel so alone. My hair goals is to grow long, thick, beautiful natural hair. I do not want any more breakage, shedding or dryness. I want to be able to try as many colors and styles as possible but still have healthy hair and do the safe and correct way. Natural to mean means being in its raw and pure state. No relaxers, no weaves, no fake lashes and nails. You without the enhancements and feeling good in your skin itch out those enhancements. Mt progress should be tracked via my blogs and will try my best to post pics as well.

  67. Hello Everyone! My name is Dana and I'm from Oklahoma but reside in Texas.

I decided to participate in this challenge because I've been natural for almost 9 years yet most of this time I wore locs. I big chopped again July 2012 and I've loved learning about my hair.

During this challenge my goals are: (1) get to know my curls, (2) establish a manageable regimen, (3) grow a few inches of healthy hair, and (4) engage with others. I'm sure I'll think of a few other things along the way. :o) I believe this will be the base of moving toward long-term goals for my curls.

Natural is embracing life in the way God created them. As for my lifestyle, this includes my hair in that I try not to permanently alter what God gave me. I've been successful at applying this to other areas of my life and I found doing so with locs quite easy. I hope my journey with my free curls will be the same...in time.

I plan to track my progress via:

Blog: http://www.essenceofme.com/vlog.html -- I will blog, show pictures, products, etc.
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/freedomplease -- I will share video updates.
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/essenceofme -- I will share posts, quotes, pictures, etc.

I look forward to the journey ahead. Thanks Curls of Joy!!!

  68. My name is Kabrina. I am from Houston, TX. I decided to participate in this challenge b/c I liked the idea of setting my own goals, as opposed to following set rules. I was going to get into the Curly Girl method at the beginning of the year, but I decided not to b/c some of the criteria I had to follow wasn't good for my hair. I plan to go for the next 2.5 to 3 months of this challenge without applying heat to my hair (unless it is under the dryer for the occasional roller set), and I have been planning to grow my hair out past its usual point of growth. It is long when "stretched", but I want to see if I can go beyond that. "Natural" means curls and waves, at least for me! It is just your own hair as it is. I plan to track my progress through occasional You Tube videos.

  80. Hello, natural ladies!! Creative Coils here checking in to respond to week 1's blog entry. I am from humid, hot Houston, Texas. I decided to participate in this challenge because I want to become active in the natural hair community and soak up as much knowledge as possible from those who have boldly made the decision like me to go natural. For the longest, Houston was still a heavily premeditated black community, and Dallas, Texas was the "going back to natural" community. I am proud to say that our black community in Houston is rapidly catching on and making the transition or BCing! Also, another reason for me is that the day when the challenge ends, marks a full one year nappiversary for me!!!!

I would love to learn more about my hair while taming frizzy and retaining growth. By the way, I am looking for excellent twist cream without glycerin, parabens, sulfates, or chemicals. Send me a response, if you would like to suggest some options for my 4b hair.

My hair goals include growing my hair at least three inches, find which protective styles work best for me, and discover more about my hair so I can use the appropriate or most suitable products to achieve maximum results.

Being natural means, to me, being and ultimate self with appreciation and celebration of your uniqueness.

I will be posting links to my YouTUBE station, website, and blogging site ASAP!!

Stay on the lookout for CreativeCoils!

    Peace and balance,

My name is Amanda, I am originally from CT and have been living in FL for almost 2yrs now. I decided to participate in this challenge to learn new things and tips about my natural hair and gain encouragement from all the others going natural or that are natural. I am hoping to gain length and to start gaining my thickness back of what I lost from hair loss due to the hard water here in FL. Natural to me means being satisfied with what you were born with and have grown to be without any alterations to any part of the body including your hair. I will be tracking my progess with pictures, blogs, and vlogs, a combination of the three. Here's my story so far http://youtu.be/Nvdsa27OJ7o. I will be back with updates during week four.

  87. Hi! My name is Hannah and my email is smarticleparticle36@gmail.com. I've lived in Missouri all my life but it's possibly I might be moving away soon.
I decided to participate in this challenge one because I've been natural all my life, and when I was younger my hair seemed so different then it does right now, and it's really not all that different. I guess it's just that products that I use now, and I don't remember the products I used when I was younger. My hair is not heat trained and I've always only straightened my hair once or twice a year if that much. Another reason I joined this challenge is because I wanted to seek more knowledge on natural hair, and regimens and tips I could use to enhance and embrace my curls more.
Through this challenge I hope to gain more knowledge on naturally curly hair even though I've always been natural. Also I hope to gain more moisture in my hair because It can be really dry! I would really also love to gain more length. At this moment when my hair is curly+the shrinkage I get my hair is a little above my shoulders but when straight is right at my armpits. I hope to learn how to limit the shrinkage I get and stretch the hair without damage. I want to define my curls as well.
Natural means to me no chemicals in you're hair. It means healthy, beautiful, hair. It means you embrace and love your curls regardless if other people don't, or they don't understand. I love my natural hair and love to tell people I'm a natural girl!! This is all my hair!! It honestly makes me feel so proud.
I plan to document my journey in a notebook using a disposable camera taping pictures in the journal and also writing about my journey in the journal.
I'm so excited to start a brand new chapter of my hair journey!!!
