Week Five: Ingredients Roll Call

Hey Natural Beauties,

As a natural/transitioner you are probably bombarded by the amount of products on the market, but you must be even more overwhelmed by ingredients. What is mineral oil? What does it do? You are probably asking yourself "Wait, what is BTMS?" or "What in the world is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?" Ingredients can be very confusing because there are so many out there and they have all their varying purposes and effectiveness. There are some products that are good for the length of your hair, but you should avoid applying to the scalp.

Don't become overwhelmed because our co-host Mahogany Curls, vlogger of Love. Your. Curls. on the YT is here to help you!

  1. Hi ladies!:-) Thanx for the reminder Mahoghany Curls! You look Beautiful. I have been trying the CG method with my two daughters and we all have different hair textures:-) We have been doing it for a month now.We love it and have felt softness on our hair. However,I am starting to feel/see single strand knots and tangles. I am starting to notice in this tangled I see white residue. I use Tresemme Nourish Moisture and just started trying the flawless curls. Do you think I should stop using this and or Apple Cider Vinegar rinse or something? I went this far and want to keep on going:-) Thanx for all that you ladies share! Has benefited me very much!:-) Hugs!

  2. I think I am going to try it, because I have officially broken up with my shampoos, because they all have SLS in them, and I was wondering how my hair was so dry as I stated in week four, gosh what a waste! Thank you so much for this post.

  3. I have not watched the video yet; however, I know I totally avoid alcohol products. I know too much protein can be bad for your hair as well; however, protein can be listed in several different ways...I think the blog post this can help out many of us, I mean, ingredients can be overwhelming for transitioners and all naturals. As BeauGorgeousNatural discussed, I have a problem with my girls and trying to find the right products for their hair. We are all natural, yet we all have different textures, curl patterns, and porosity. I think once I get a better understanding of my hair, as well as my girls hair, we will be good to go! :)

  5. I'm so grateful for all this info and I have to agree with what Mahogany Curls said in the video-do what works for your hair. My mom, sister, and I had pretty decent hair but we were putting to much heat to it. We all decided to embrace our natural textures and also sulfate free and silicone free shampoos and each on of us had dry brittle and broken hair as a result. I personally tried multiple brands and each gave me the same result. My mother and I just went back to shampoos with those ingredients and there is a noticeable difference. I don't want it to seem like I'm going against the great information given above but I just wanted to reiterate the importance of knowing your hair and doing what works best for it :)

  6. What ingredients do you avoid? What ingredients work best on your hair?

I avoid sulfates and silicones. My hair loves every form of proteins particullary wheat, silk, and keratin. Some people are protein sensative. My hair also loves very water based products and creamy products. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothing is great, my hair loves Tresemme Natural Conditioners, and creamy stylers. :)

  7. I avoid sulfate like the plague. It dries up my hair really badly. When I do have to shampoo, which is just once a week, I use Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo, a sulfate-free product. My hair loves Glycerin and Water based products such as Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Tresemme Natural Conditioner! - discoveringnatural.blogspot.com

  9. I read this and viewed all the links early last week and never posted a response. Um...since I went natural (maybe a few weeks after my big chop) I have adhered to the curly girl method religiously. No blow drying, no straighteners, no heat basically. No sulfates, silicones, parabens, etc. I try to be as natural as I can be and that includes not just my hair, but the products I use on my hair. I am a strict DevaCurl girl. The only thing besides devacurl products that I use are jojabo oil, coconut oil, and a mixture of glycerin, water, and lavender. Thats it. I loved the last link that was like a dictionary of hair product ingredients, it was very thorough and informative...Thanks you guys.
