Hey Naturalistas!
Many of us, especially newly naturals are still trying to grasp the personality of our hair. Analyzing your hair's characteristics is very important. Especially when wanting to maintain a healthy head of curls. When we talk about analyzing your hair, we are referring to porosity, texture, density, elasticity, and pattern.
Youtuber Denimnpixie made a video on analyzing your hair and its importance. Check it out below.
You can also check out THIS ARTICLE that was posted on CurlyNikki for more information on porosity!
For those of you who want to know and understand your hair pattern/texture but are confused by all the charts and typing systems, check out these videos by Youtuber JourneytoMyRoots!

Part Two
Hope this helps!
Are you a natural/transitioner who care about texture/pattern? What's your hair porosity?
Also, today marks our FIRST CHECK IN!! We are one step closer to our goals. So far we've spoken about the anatomy and science of hair, lifestyle, vitamins, diet, and now, how to analyze your hair. We hope that you are learning new knowledge or reinforcing what you already know!
In honor of you completing the first four weeks of the challenge...Here is a giveaway on us!
Excellent for new naturalistas such as myself. It's been 1 month post BC. I've learned everything in the past 4 weeks and I look forward to learning more!. I find each week's post valuable to me as I'm a natural newbie :)

I'm thankful for this information. It's been very helpful.
ReplyDeleteGreat info! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI have learned a lot about the makeup of my hair and what essential things such as vitamins and water are important to the hair! All the information has been great!
ReplyDeleteI've learned alot about different ways to keep my hair healthy. Week 3 has been very helpful as far as learning about different vitamins and diets to continue my journey to healthy natural hair.
ReplyDeleteI am loving what we've gone over so far. It has reinforced the good things that I've learned in my natural hair journey thus far.
ReplyDeleteThis was very interesting and informative. I will try to identify my porosity level for better understanding of my hair.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how or where I'm suppose to check in but here are my links :)

I have learned that it takes more than good products to get healthy hair. It is a full body of art. STress levels, diet, exercise and water intake all play a part in healthy hair. I knew this before, but I didnt really realaize how much I was stunting my growth by NOT paying closer attention to certain things.
ReplyDeleteI am learning how to properly take care of my hair from the inside out (amph327)
ReplyDeleteIt'll be a month since my BC Sunday and this has really been helpful with me starting fresh. I did not know that there were so many other factors that go along with keeping your hair healthy and the best it can be. I am not really sure about the hair typing because my hair is still in the starting phase...and I have so many different patterns going on right now(3A at the crown, 3B/4A on the sides and 3C in the back. I am really excited about the check in I will be posting to youtube later on this week & a product review! YouTube: naturallydanii1015
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!!!!!
Over the last few weeks I have learned a few things about my hair, one, it needs more attention than I thought, two, it really does want cooperate despite how much I think it hate me, and three, I love my hair!
ReplyDeleteThe post that has been the most valuable to me was the post last week about a healthy lifestyle. Before this challenge I did may more attention to my hair and less attention to my body and what I put into my body. I haven't gone through the videos yet, but the information above will probably be more valuable than the lifestyle post.
I never really understood the whole density, porosity thing, and the YouTube videos I have watched have just been a tad bit too scientific and long and boring. :( Hopefully I watch, listen and take notes... :) Thanks again for this challenge opportunity Curls of Joy.
I loved these videos! They are so informative and has taught me so much about my hair and how to treat it right. I am going to be doing the porosity test the next time I do a wash and go. I loved the " geek" who informed me about the science of our hair as this will help me to try to use products that will nourish my hair.
ReplyDeleteI have learned so much over the past few weeks. I have really been trying to alter my eating habits to support healthy hair growth. I try to snack on nuts instead of chips and I eat more bananas to increase potassium. I would like to re-visit that post in upcoming weeks as I slowly adopt better eating habits.
ReplyDeleteMe o My..... where do I start? I was wondering about my hair type, I just went with nappy dry and curly wet.... Like you said there are so many ways to look at the pattern of ones hair. I've seen different pictures showing the pattern and most of them were not the same... The videos have helped me understand my pattern and the reason my hair stay dry all the time..Over the last few weeks I have tried to keep it moist I clipped my ends washed and braided it to my scalp, even then it dried out....So glad I joined this challenge it's helping me so much..
ReplyDeleteIt's been one month since I bc'd, I really needed this info because I feel so confused some days!
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to my 4 week update
Deletehttp://youtu.be/Ula20G3u3M8
I just recently did my big chop, and this information is very useful. Knowing my hair pattern is interesting, but knowing my porosity, density, elasticity, etc is very helpful. I consider my hair to be of low porosity, because I did the test with the cup of water (with clean strands of hair) and my hair floated, it wouldn't sink, three days later and it was still floating. With that being said, I have a question, and this question may be answered in another week of this challenge, but how do you know when your hair is moisturized? I follow the CG method religiously, and I apply conditioner to my hair daily in an effort to moisturize my hair (DevaCurl one condition), but I don't feel as if my hair is moisturized. So once again...How do you know when it is moisturized? I know this question may sound stupid, but keep in mind I am new to the world of curly. This blog and the curls of joy challenge has helped me out a lot on my journey, but I just don't know how to know if my hair is moisturized. You guys have helped me out so much already. Thank you for all you do and all the effort you guys put into teaching people like myself about natural hair. Thank You.
ReplyDeleteAre you a natural/transitioner who care about texture/pattern? Natural . I do wonder what it is but I am still kind of confused.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your hair porosity? And yeap I am confused if I did this right . I mean some of my strands I go over and its bumpy. And then I did the clean strand test and it was at the bottom and now its at the top . Its been three days since . . . . confused .
All this stuff is confusing me I don't know what I am not understanding ,
Wow! These videos were great! I previously thought I was a 4b but according to the video by JourneytomyRoots I am a 3b/3c. This may sound weird but I am transitioning and my natural hair feels smooth and my relaxed hair feels rough. I guess I will have to wait until I am fully natural to do the porosity test. I am pretty sure I have high porosity hair though. Follow my journey on my blog naturaljunkie.blogspot.com! Thanks for all of the information!
ReplyDeleteGood morning!! Those videos were a great help, I finally understand the whole hair typing. It was so confusing, I had it all wrong, LOL! I will coming up on my 11 month anniversary of my BC. It has & continues to be a roller coaster, but I'm loving every moment of it. I am a 3b/3c. The porosity video was very informative, thank you so much for posting! Seems my has high porosity. Since going natural, I quickly learned you truly have to have patience for being natural. As I stated before, I'm loving every moment of this journey :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the info. The videos were great. I've had such a hard time trying to determine my "hair type."
ReplyDeleteAwesome Awesome Awesome!!! Thank you so much this was great! I started the curlygirl method and my hair is so happy..my curls are poppin and now I understand more as to why that is happening. Question tho..where do we post the pictures for our check in?
ReplyDeleteYou can post on our FB page https://www.facebook.com/shopcurlsofjoy
DeleteEverything Ive learned so far has been interesting. Im heading over to these ladies youtube channel for more educational videos
ReplyDeleteThe hair typing video had me thinking my hair has some kind of multiple personality disorder...lol. I swear I have individual strand that kink, curl and bend on the SAME hair strand. Gotta love natural hair.
ReplyDeleteI found the article about the vitamins most interesting. I always knew about Biotin for hair growth, but I dont hear much about the other nutriens that were mentioned on BGLH
ReplyDeleteI've learned so much about the anatomy and health of my own natural hair in the past four weeks. Most valuable has been the pH and porosity sections by far. Two factors that I never would've taken into consideration had it not been for this hair challenge. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteGood info! I'll definitely have to test my hair's porosity the next time I wash it. As far as my hair type goes, I always assumed that it was type 4c and/or 4b, because of its "kinkiness" and the way it felt (rough), but I don't think it has a definite "z" pattern. Maybe it's a combination of "z" and corkscrew shapes. By the tightness of the curl and the shrinkage, I'm still pretty certain that it's a "c" pattern, maybe with a slight mixture of "b". I posted my week 4 update on my blog (http://naturallyyo.blogspot.com/). I'll try to post pictures later.
ReplyDeleteHey! Here is the link to my video! http://youtu.be/6Z2SsL997Sg
ReplyDeleteSorry its late, I have been busy with school and upcoming finals! I am really enjoying myself, this challenge is very informative and I love learning about my natural hair and I feel more confident with myself. I love it!
I have a question since I may have missed it, sulphates are dangerous right? I mean my hair is progressing really well you can check out the link below to see my hair, but in the same instance I had split ends then I checked my shampoos and it turns out they all have sulphates. which could be the culprit that made my hair dryer and more prone to split ends and breakage.
ReplyDeletehttp://mrstrichards.blogspot.com/2012/04/french-braid-out-on-kinky-natural-hair.html
Most sulfates dry your hair out. Dry hair breaks and splits so your shampoo could be the culprit. Hope that helps.
DeleteI'm 8 months post BC (but currently in twists as a PS until mid-July). Those vids were so helpful! They made hair typing much clearer to me - even though I don't personally believe that it will be that influential in my regimen. What I am realizing is that my hair may be low porosity. I've noticed that water and product just sit on my hair, especially oils. I don't use a lot but my hair always feels greasy and I never understood why. What I've been trying to do lately is to let the steam in the shower lift my cuticles before I moisturize and seal my hair at night.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, I've just been spritzing my twists 2x a day and shampooing 1x week. Look forward to more great information! Thank you!
Such a great post as usually!:-) Some things can get confusing and overwhelming sometimes but knowing your hair is the key:-)
ReplyDeleteI been natural all my life and have yet to find out my porosity! These blogs and reminders are very helpful! You point us in a direction with out us even looking for it! Thanx beauties!
DeleteLove this! I have high porosity with 3b, 3c, and 4a hair, and my texture is really not dense...it's very fine. :)
ReplyDeleteI finally understand the hair types i have 3c 4a hair it's confusing at times but i'm enjoying my hair journey thanks
